It has been a rough season for the 2-6 San Francisco 49ers so far and things will only get more interesting as Blaine Gabbert takes over for the beleaguered Colin Kaepernick in week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons. Kaepernick has had a few moments of productivity this season against defenses that have been less than terrific but for the most part has struggled under the pressure that envelopes him at the line of scrimmage.

There have been challenges on the right side of the offensive line and the rotation at RG continues between Jordan Devey and Andrew Tiller with each of the guards working two series before switching out. The stress fracture in RB Carlos Hyde‘s foot has kept him limited during some games and out of others. The team lost both veteran RB Reggie Bush for the season and rookie RB Mike Davis for several weeks due to injuries that occurred in St. Louis. Without a supportive running game, even more pressure has landed on the quarterback’s shoulders.

Kaepernick hasn’t seemed the same since week 3 when he threw 4 interceptions to the Arizona Cardinals, two of which were pick sixes. Several of his passes since have been thrown extremely out of bounds or at receiver’s feet as if he is consciously making sure that he isn’t the reason for another turnover. He shouldered all of the blame for that loss and it seems like he is afraid of putting himself in the same position a second time. Letting Gabbert take over may be a good break for the QB, a moment to step away from the game and assess what he can do to help himself and the offense. The team has their bye after the Falcons game, so Kaepernick will have at least two weeks to regroup.

Reports from the team and coaches are that practices have been very productive all season but the offense has just failed to be effective during games. With the trade of TE Vernon Davis to Denver and the acquisitions of RBs Pierre Thomas and Shaun Draughn into the fold,  working the new personnel into Sunday’s game plan.

Time will tell.
