Football People Doing Football Business

Heard the expression “Change for the sake of change”? When people hear “change” is being made in the Washington Redskins offseason the groans begin and the heads shake. In market, NFL media and fans alike, in their desire to quench their football thirst during this time, become pontificaters and prognosticators resulting in doing only that, pontificating and prognosticating from the day after the season ends, to the day the new season begins. Personally, I am not a fan of any “prediction conversation” in the offseason. WE MUST QUENCH THE THIRST! It is a withdrawal, for us all.

For all who are #HTTRDIEHARDS, this offseason, President Bruce Allen, forever positive, stated the team is #WinningOffTheField in a press conference following the ending of yet another losing season, meant to speak to the team’s #NFLGoodGuys who conduct good works in the community. This important character trait in any individual, on a winning football team, would have been heralded amidst the despicable and now challenging images the NFL faces in the realm of domestic violence,  alas the comment became a media joke, even a daily bit on a local (not a Washington Redskins owned radio station), 106.7 the Fan’s 10am slot with Grant Paulsen and Danny Rouhier, because the product on the field has yet to yield a consistent winner.

Winning the NFC East in 2012, seems so far way, yet it really isn’t. One play separates a player from being #WinnngOnTheField, for any NFL team. Pushing the RESET button happens to every NFL team in the offseason and the Washington Redskins strategically pushed theirs this time, by hiring a General Manager with a NFL pedigree – Scot McCloughan.

Football people doing football business became the theme, a change, absolutely, for this franchise. For a “change”, this offseason, the Washington Redskins “changes” were made with a purposeful football intent to yield positive football results, which will in due time, do what all of the other “changes” did not, an increase in franchise revenue, which is where the “changes” in the past were centered. Washington Redskins currently rank #9.

Some good reasons to “change”:

  1. To become a Leader
  2. Needs are being addressed
  3. To be innovative

Let’s see where this purposeful change takes the Washington Redskins in 2015.

Being selected to attend an exclusive (100 fans selected randomly) #WOWRedskins OTA event in May, at Redskins Training Facility in Ashburn, VA, as a #WOWRedskins Member, the largest female fan base at 115,727 (for more information on joining click here), was an opportunity to witness the change for myself. Prior to heading up to OTAs, a wonderful buffet lunch was provided by Famous Dave’s, there were raffles, and to my complete shock I won an autographed Alfred Morris jersey!

I answered her question from Twitter “if you could be a player in the NFL, which one would it be?” I answered, “Running Back, because of the ability to be a speedster, a hard hitter, finding holes created by blockers, making defenders miss, with a  low center of gravity.”  Liz’s response was, “Would you like to write for nflfemale.com?”.

Walking up to the practice bubble, as it is called, with my friend and fellow #WOWRedskins member known on Twitter @skinzmama, we met up with Team President Bruce Allen, see photo above, with his brother, former Governor George Allen, sons of former Washington Redskins Coach George Allen.  A photo op for sure. His team’s motivational words, “The Future Is Now” creating a sense of urgency, is revered.  #StrongerTogether, the team’s current motivational words are worn on T-Shirts by all Coaches, speaks to what this team knows to be true in creating a winning NFL football team, the foundation of a winning franchise. Words motivate people. Each day we all look for professional, as well as, personal motivation.  I am confident many of you can name yours!

Inside the “bubble”, practice sessions were in full swing. We happened to stand directly in front of #Special Teams Players, yes, 1 foot from them. 100 #WOWRedskins fans were between 20 yard hash marks, right next to the media covering indoor OTA practice that day. HOF Washington Redskins player Darrell Green, and QB Joe Theismann were among the alumni there to shake hands and catch a glimpse of the then 99 players seeking a spot on the roster by the end of preseason. Briefly chatting with Nick Sundberg, for photo ops with all of #SpecialTeams,  but respectfully not creating a distraction, he happily obliged. Reminder to self and all others as we were before we entered, this is an official practice and we are guests to watch, not disturb. New additions acquired in the offseason include “Pot Roast” Terrance Knighton, glad he with us now. While with Denver he executed a memorable sack on our franchise quarterback, Robert Griffin III. See all of the offseason acquisitions that make up the team roster heading into training camp this week and more photos at www.redskins.com.

Following practice, I was able to meet Robert Griffin III for a few minutes to get an autograph, wishing him good health and a great season, as we all headed out to meet players as they left practice.  Chris Thompson, Running Back, looking to make the final 53, took a few minutes with me to discuss his focus, desire and intent as well as a play, as it speaks to his strength’s coming out of the backfield catching and running with a diversion we will keep between us, that I had brought up to him, saying, “We ran that in college and it worked really well. I am doing everything I can to make this team”. Thank you Chris, for your time after practice. #WOWRedskins fans were delighted, as players so patiently autographed footballs, hats, shirts and took pictures after a full day of practice.
