Well, not really. Certainly our record in preseason play is 0-2 so far, but our 1st team is undefeated! It’s all about perspective, right?
The Jaguars have had the lead, in both preseason games, prior to our starters being pulled from the game. After playing the NY Jets in week one of preseason, and hosting the TB Buccaneers at Everbank Field in week two, there’s a lot of positive in what we’re seeing.
QB Blake Bortles is 14 of 18, with 190 yards and 2 TDs, with no INTs, through the first 2 preseason games. He looks composed, he looks confident, and he looks like he’s the definite leader of this offense. The offensive line, which gave up 122 sacks on our quarterbacks the past two seasons, have only allowed 1 sack on Bortles, thus far.
The addition of Chris Ivory to our running back core, through free agency in the offseason, seems to have been a great move. He and TJ Yeldon, both, have scored a TD in preseason play. Some of the success can certainly be attributed to an improved offensive line. I do feel Ivory and Yeldon are going to make a great RB tandem.
Our wide receivers are picking up right where they left off last season. Allen Robinson has had 7 catches for 114 yards, with a long of 45 yards. Allen Hurns has had 3 catches for 42 yards and a TD. Even Marqise Lee, who’s been plagued with injuries over the past 2 seasons, has remained healthy (knock on wood), and has had 5 catches for 57 yards. When you add Julius Thomas and Marcedes Lewis to this offense, Bortles is going to have more weapons this year than he knows what to do with. It’s a good problem to have, and as a fan, I’m excited to get this season started!
After having what many think is the best draft in Jaguars history, there’s been a lot of excitement in Jacksonville this offseason. After Dante Fowler tore his ACL in the first hour of rookie mini camp last year, our first round draft pick from 2015 has finally hit the field. Joining him is Jalen Ramsey and Myles Jack. If that’s not enough; free agency additions, Malik Jackson, Tashaun Gipson and Prince Amukamara are sure to catch your attention.
During the first two preseason games, it’s very evident that this is a MUCH different defense! They are very fast, very physical, and we love an aggressive defense, right? Well, not in the form of triple digit penalty yards, we don’t. In just two games, the Jaguars have amassed 25 penalties for 253 yards. In my opinion, unacceptable and shows a definite need for improvement in discipline. But we’re certainly getting there, and what we’re seeing is encouraging.
All in all, Jaguar fans are encouraged so far this preseason. Nearly 60k fans showed for Saturday night’s home game vs Tampa Bay. New renovations to both clubhouses at Everbank Field were revealed, and are very impressive. We believe we’re well on our way to being a force to reckon with. Watch out AFC South…we’re coming for ya!
