Free Agency for the Tennessee Titans

Official Tennessee Titans Reporter

Free to be in Tennessee… or maybe to just leave.

Tennessee Titans who are leaving the organization are DL Al Woods who was released, TE Anthony Fasano (going to Miami Dolphins) and G Chance Warmack (going to Philadelphia Eagles). WR Kendall Wright is headed to the Chicago Bears with a one year contract.

Re-signing Titans are DT Karl Klug, he is recovering well after Achilles tendon surgery. He had suffered an injury at last year’s Kansas City Chiefs game. LB Nate Palmer, who had joined the Titans last season, will be returning. He was noted as an asset to special teams.  And TE Phillip Supernaw, who was voted one of the best looking men in the NFL has reached a multiyear deal with the Titans.

Quarterback Matt Cassel signed a two year contract with Tennessee, and will probably be the starting QB for all pre-season games. Our number one QB Marcus Mariota has been rehabbing out in Oregon and is healing well after surgery on his right fibula.  Per head coach Mike Mularkey: “Our No. 1 goal is to make sure he is under center opening day.”

And the new Tennessee Titans:

We have two from the Oakland Raiders, one Jacksonville Jaguar, one Atlanta Falcon, a Denver Bronco and a New England Patriot signed.  And the big rumor about town is that we may get another Patriot named Hightower.

Logan Ryan, CB formerly from the Patriots is the fella that I’m most excited about…He has two Super Bowl rings and is regarded highly by Titans GM Jon Robinson. Mr. Ryan has stated per TitansOnline, “I will do whatever it takes to put the team first…I want to win football games.”  Last season the Titans had two definite weak spots, the cornerbacks did not have stellar performances and special teams were not impressive either.  Ryan hopefully will be a part of the remedy for our cornerback problem.  I’m guessing that during draft week, another cornerback will be a top pick priority.

The two Raiders that have been added are LB Daren Bates and S Brynden Trawick.  I’m surprised that any players would be willing to leave the Raiders, as they played so well last year and made it into the playoffs. Trawick states that he likes that the Titans are a young up and coming team with a good quarterback. He mentions that he and Bates work well together, and these two men should strengthen the Titans other week spot, special teams. GM Robinson states that he liked how these two former Raiders played during kickoffs, that they were intense and focused.

Eric Reems from the Atlanta Falcons will be the return man for the Titans. (I guess Marc Mariani won’t be returning).  He has history with current Titans offensive coach Terry Robiskie and HC Mularkey and he has been to the Pro Bowl.  The Titans did not get one touchdown last year off of a punt return. Nothing starts a game off better than a kick return scoring a TD right off the bat.

NT Sylvester Williams was just released from the Denver Broncos, per ESPN, the Broncos were “ready to move on” from him.  A negative statement? But he is another Super Bowl winner, and although he didn’t get the best grading for last years’ play, maybe he just needs a change of scenery to give his career some new life. Mile High Sports stated that Williams had 29 tackles, one sack and one pass defend last year and played all 16 games.

And we also have a Jaguar, S Johnathan Cyprien. Pro FootBall Focus has Cyprien ranked at #7 for the NFL.  Cyprien was quoted as saying he respects Titans Walker and Mariota. And judging from his twitter feed, he is a fan friendly guy.  He’s promising this: “we are gonna be the best thing that Tennessee has ever seen” in regards to the new secondary line up.

Social media has been a buzz this weekend concerning where LB Dont’a Hightower is going to sign.  Hightower is originally from Lewisburg TN and has built a house in the Nashville area so everyone is concluding that he will be signing with the Titans.  He has also been photographed around Nashville this weekend, the poor man cannot eat out without someone taking his picture and asking if he is joining the Titans.

A two time Super Bowl pro linebacker would be another wonderful addition.  One of Nashville’s hot chicken joints, Party Fowl, has promised to give Dont’a free chicken for the length of his contract, if he comes to Tennessee.  Over 20 years I have lived in this area and I have never tried hot chicken. Being from Western New York, I’ll just stick with the hot wings, Buffalo got the chicken done right!

So now we are down to the guesses for the Draft.  I say the Titans will want a cornerback, a tight end and a wide receiver. Some of the mock drafts say that the Titans will get CB Marshon Lattimore from Ohio State, WR Corey Davis from Western Michigan is another guess and also I’ve noticed that the Titans spent a lot of time with TE OJ Howard from Alabama.

In a perfect world, Tennessee would get all three of these guys.  Our GM states that he is more interested in game tape than the combine and that is where our #5 pick will be coming from, the actual game performance.  I would be happy if the Titans somehow found a spot for DB Derek Barnett from the Vols, I loved watching him play, but looks like there is a lot of other teams wanting him as their #1 pick.

I signed up for the Return to Football 5K run which is in May, so I’m off to try to get in shape for it.  The teams are shaping up, and now it’s time for the fans to shape up.  I highly recommend all NFL fans sign up for their team’s 5K races. It’s a great way to meet your team and bond with your fellow fans.  And welcome to all our new players, I hope y’all like Nashville – Titan Up!
