The 2016 NFL Draft is officially over and even though the San Diego Chargers did not draft Rico Gathers out of Baylor University (lucky Cowboys!) they did secure eight promising talents – or are they?

Here is what I think of Chargers general manager Tom Telesco’s 2016 draft class:

Round 1 – DE Joey Bosa – Grade: A – At first I was not sure why we didn’t take an offensive lineman, then I watched this kid’s film and listened to how excited he was to be a Charger.  He is going to be something special and I can’t wait to watch him rushing the passer.

Round 2 – TE Hunter Henry – Grade B+ – Hunter was touted as the best TE coming out in the draft and he was, on paper.  So, I’m super excited to see this kid’s ball handling skills, but in my opinion Gathers was a better fit for San Diego.

Round 3 – C Max Tuerk – Grade B+ – At first glance this kid has it all, but then you see the MRI photo of his knee in the mix.  I like him, just hoping we do not end up with another splinter-butt lineman.

Round 4 – ILB Joshua Perry – Grade A – He is all that and a bag of chips when it comes to linebackers, but getting up to NFL speed emotionally will be the key for this kid to be a star.

Round 5 – OLB Jatavis Brown – Grade B- – I like my linebackers big and beefy and Jatavis is 227 pounds and 5’ 11”.  Perhaps they are thinking special teams or even moving to safety so time will tell if he’s a good fit.

Round 6 – P Drew Kaser – Grade A – Out with the old and in with the new.  This kid looks solid and should be a good fit in San Diego.

Of note, this acquisition caused the subsequent release of 13 year veteran punter Mike Scifres

Round 6 – FB Derek Watt – Grade A+ – A fullback?  Yes!  I love, love, love having a real fullback in the mix!  Plus, he just happens to be JJ Watt’s brother, so let’s hope that awesomeness is just in their genetics!

Round 7 – FB/G Donavon Clark – Grade A – Young, healthy offensive lineman, yes please!

If it were not for the agreements being made with 20 undrafted free agents while the pomp and circumstance of the draft were going on, the grades would be different. But Telesco and crew wrangled up more beef for the line with additions including:  OT Tyler Johnston – Oregon, G Sebastian Johansson – Marshall, G Mike McQueen – Ohio, C Spencer Pulley – Vanderbilt and OT Zeth Ramsay – Colorado Mesa.

Thank you for reading and remember to find and sign the petition to get the Chargers’ new stadium vote on the ballot.  Every signature matters and in November, every vote matters.
