D-Wash and the Draft 2017

Hello, my Football Family! It seems like the season is still a long ways away and in all reality….. It is! The good news is that we have made it to NFL Draft Week 2017.

Day 1 of the draft starts on Thursday, April 27th where teams will select their 1st round picks. The Arizona Cardinals have the 13th pick in Round 1 currently but we all know how things can change during the draft. I have narrowed it down to the player that I would be extremely happy about the Cards picking up on Thursday. *Drum roll please* It has to be Texas Tech Quarterback Patrick Mahomes!

There is no surprise that we need a quarterback for the future of this team and I think this kid would fit in perfectly.

Per the NFL Draft Profile, “Mahomes possesses NFL body type for work inside and out of the pocket. Has an undeniable swagger and confidence to his game. Accuracy has improved in each season since his freshman year. Naturally accurate in his every day throws. Comfortable challenging defenders in space. Has arm strength and fearlessness to attack the cover-2 voids down the sideline. Can make deep, field side throws. Cranks up velocity to fit passes into tight windows.”

The kid will also have at least a year to study and learn invaluable NFL knowledge from veteran QB Carson Palmer. I believe this will help to tame the young man into a more conservative quarterback in the NFL and teach him not to rush on every play.

I have heard that Patrick tends to be a bit head strong and likes to go after the big plays as often as he can. Having a strong Head Coach like Bruce Arians, along with the other leaders on our team, I feel will also allow Patrick to be molded into an exceptional quarterback.

Now onto the second big headline this week for the Arizona Cardinals: The reinstatement of ILB Daryl Washington. Washington was reinstated by the NFL on a conditional basis late yesterday after 3 years of inactivity for the team.

Marc Sessler from Around the NFL wrote, “Washington has been suspended without pay since May 2014 for violating the league’s Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse. His ban was tied to a marijuana violation, which Washington sought counseling for. In addition to multiple suspensions for substance-related issues, he also served a one-year probation in 2014 for assaulting a former girlfriend.”

The topic of Mr. Washington’s return has been chatted about the entire time he has been gone. Every year it comes up somehow, whether it is from fans asking local beat writers on any updates or thoughts on the matter, to some questioning if Daryl Washington would ever return to football at all. There is no question that D-Wash is a talented player but now the Cardinals have a couple different options and it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Here are my 2 pennies on the subject. If he can still play and be beneficial to the team and is truly working to correct himself and his behavior then I’m all for him returning. With that, however, it needs to be understood that if there is any other future infraction then he needs to be terminated from the team.

Well, that’s about all I have for today. I know everyone is busy the day before the draft but I’d love to hear your feedback and/or comments!
