Just like Alexander from the cute Disney movie, quarterback Philip Rivers and the cast of the now 1-2 San Diego Chargers had a terrible day.  I am not sure if Philip Rivers started his day with gum in his hair like Alexander, but the rest of his day was very bad indeed.

In the Chargers 31-14 loss to the Vikings, Philip Rivers was knocked down, sacked four times, fumbled and threw an interception before finally being taken out of the game in the fourth quarter.  Backup quarterback Kellen Clemens finished out the last seven minutes in a drive topped off by a pass to wide receiver Keenan Allen for a touchdown with :36 left on the clock.  Rivers supporting cast managed to drop most of the passes he managed to get off before being pummeled but only to the tune of 246 yards and one touchdown adding up to a 81.2 passer rating.  Here are some lowlights of some of the most painful events during the Chargers visit to Minnesota.

First Quarter:

2:55 – Vikings OLB Anthony Barr hits Rivers as he tries to throw on 3rd and 10 and Rivers coughs up the ball.  Cornerback Captain Munnerlyn came up with the ball at the 13 and the Vikings get the ball.

Second Quarter:

14:57 – Third down again, 8 to go, Rivers under crazy pressure, forces the throw out of the reach of Keenan Allen to bring up punter Mike Scifres’ third punt on the game. It went only 21 yards to give the Vikings the ball at their own 33.

5:22-  Trying to put together a drive before the half, Rivers gets hit again as he looks for Danny Woodhead and the ball just skips across the ground toward the running back forcing another Scifres punt.

Third Quarter:

13:34 – The second half started off with more of the same when Vikings DT Tom Johnson came in untouched on a missed block to sack Rivers at full speed as the Chargers went three-and-out to start the half.

4:04 – It appeared the Chargers held the Vikings to a Blair Walsh field goal, but Chargers linebacker Melvin Ingram got the flag for holding on the attempt giving Minnesota a fresh set of downs and a touchdown instead of a field goal.

Fourth Quarter:

14:56 – Finally, a little glimmer of Felipe Rios shows up in the fourth quarter.  Rivers hits receiver Steve Johnson for a gain of 30!

14:56 – Oh wait, on the same play Philip Rivers is knocked down by DE Everson Griffen drawing the roughing the passer penalty (FINALLY!!) and adding 15 yards to the pass to Johnson.

14:17 – Felipe Rios is feeling like things might be turning around and looks towards the end zone. Rivers throws an interception and the Vikings OLB Chad Greenway gladly grabs it and runs it back for a Vikings touchdown.

10:30 – To end Philips’ horrible day on a sack, was just how things ended.  Going for it on 4th and 6th, Rivers is sacked for a loss of four yards and the Chargers turned the ball over on downs.

Finally, with a little over thirty seconds left, the Vikings regained possession, and quarterback Teddy Bridgewater took a knee to end the game and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

“On a game like this, there aren’t a ton of positives but…I think collectively we fought to the end but we have a long way to go.  We’ve been 1-2 before and have won in double digits.  I’m not making any predictions but there’s a lot of football left.” – Philip Rivers
